Tian Ziqian graduated from the Picture Book Studio program at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2020. She then continued her studies at Tama Art University, one of the top art universities in Japan. Her picture book “Mr. Sun's Shop” was shortlisted for the Xinyi Picture Book Award in 2020, and also won an Excellence Award at the Japan Children's Illustration Award in 2022

Summary

In a small town named Chimney Town, each resident has a chimney atop their head, from which yellow smoke emerges when they're happy and blue smoke when they're sad, painting the sky above the town in vibrant colors. One day, a bird egg accidentally falls into the chimney of a little girl named Congcong. To protect the egg, Congcong even held back her own smoke, but her face kept getting redder and bigger! Can Congcong keep her emotions in check to safeguard the egg? This narrative explores a child's innocent clumsiness and brave perseverance in protecting a bird egg, while metaphorically comparing chimneys to emotional outlets, conveying to children the importance of expressing and releasing their feelings.

Author

Lin Yaqi, a graduate of the 2023 Central Academy of Fine Arts Picture Book Studio, won the first prize for her work “Chimney City” in the Central Academy of Fine Arts graduation design competition. Her other design works have previously received the first prize in the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Lenovo IP Design Competition. Her words include “Oracle Bone Inscriptions Picture BookL Matters on the Face“.

Authors

Jia Yuqian is a picture book author and children's poetry author who holds a master's degree from Nanjing University of the Arts. She has published works such as "Catching a Shooting Star," "Ten Thousand Hugs," and "Delivering Watermelons". Her works have won the Seventh Hsin Yi Picture Book Award Review Committee Recommendation Award, the 2022 Russian "Book Impression" Award, and the Second Oriental Baby Original Picture Book Award.

Wang Zumin is a famous illustrator and editor of picture books. His representative works include "Sixty-Six Cows," "The Storyteller on a Winter Night," and "The Warehouse Rat and the Eagle Borrow Grain" . He has won awards such as the 2023 Bologna Ragazzi Award for Best Children's Book and the 2021 Chen Bochui International Children's Literature Award.

Wang Ying, graduated of the Art College of Nanjing Normal University, is currently a teacher at the Art Design College of Jiangsu Vocational Institute of Commerce. Her illustration "Tiny Cat Finds Friends" won the Jiangsu Province "Five Ones Project" Award.

About the book:

Little Rabbit is curious about many things: “Why are mommy’s eyes so big?” “Why are mommy’s ears so long?” “Why can mommy run so fast?” No matter how many questions he has and how weird the questions are, the mommy rabbit always answers them patiently only to “be able to see you, hear you, and be with you no matter how far away you are.” The little rabbit only has a hazy understanding about the answers, but he can sense that it’s really nice to be with mom. Awards: Te English edition of this book won “USBBY Outstanding International Books 2018” of American Branch of International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), which makes it the first Chinese work of children’s literature to win this award since its foundation. Summary

The book tells of the epic journey of Mao, a Spotted-headed Goose. The story starts on Bander Lake in Sanjiangyuan, where my dad volunteered as a guardian, protecting the birds. When I first saw Mao in May, he didn’t look strong enough to survive a journey of over 1000km, flying up 8,000m to cross to the other side of the Himalayas for the winter. When we returned to the lake in October, Mao had grown and was preparing for the journey.

Da Wu is an author/illustrator born in the 90's. He has many fictions and essays published in magazines such as Reading Friends, and Youth Digest.

His picture book, "Birds and Statues" won the 2019 Ananas Illustrations Award. In 2019, his other picture book, "The King of Trees", was selected by dPICTUS* as part of the top 100 outstanding picture books, and was exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Summary

In the winter sky, a flash of small pink lightning was born. It fell to the ground faintly. It accidentally woke up the hibernating little frog. The little frog brought the lightning to the river, the frozen fishes in the river were also woken up. The little lightning felt that his power was getting stronger and stronger. It wanted to wake up all things on the earth such as worms in the ground and clouds in the sky. Finally it became pink peach blossoms on a tree. Spring is coming.

It’s a story about the Chinese traditional solar term “The Waking of Insects”. It used printmaking drawing style to portray how lightning wakes every kind of sleeping creature and brings spring to the earth. We can feel the connection between nature and the changeable life force in the cute story.

Author

Jiang Yue, Generation Z picture book creator, 2019 graduate student of the Picture Book Studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. “Little Pink Lightning" is her graduation work and her first picture book. She has great enthusiasm in traditional Chinese culture and she actively engages her emotions in her work to give life to her images as much as she can.

Chang Li, a picture book critic, translator, and writer, Higo Wu also runs a popular podcast about picture books. Many of his works have been recommended by the Taipei Public Library’s Award-Winning Children’s Books campaign, including his picture book The Flowering Buddha which won the 2018 Children’s Book of the Year.

Chen Pei-Hsiu was previously an archaeological illustrator at the Academia Sinica before going freelance, and her illustraqons have been published in magazines, newspapers, and picture books. She has been shortlisted twice for the Prize for Young Talent at the Angoulême Internaqonal Comics Fesqval, as well as twice at 3×3 Internaqonal Illustraqon Awards. Her graphic novel For the Time Being has been published in French.

Cao Wenxuan, author of the acclaimed Bronze and Sunflower, is the recipient of the 2016 Hans Christian Andersen Award. He has also won several of China’s important awards for children’s literature. Professor of Chinese literature at Peking University, Cao Wenxuan has seen many of his books become bestsellers in China. Titles such as The Straw House and Bronze and Sunflower have collectively sold millions of copies in China, and Cao has won most of the domestic prizes available to children's authors. His featured title Bronze and Sunflower have been translated into more than 10 languages.

Alessandro Sanna (b.1975, Italy) is considered one of Italy's leading contemporary illustrators. He has earned wide recognition across Europe as an illustrator and author. His work has appeared in the New York Times Book Review and The New Yorker. He is a prolific and popular creator of illustrated books for children and readers of all ages and has received many awards and had many exhibitions.

Author

Zhu Chengliang is a member of China Artists Association. The "Old House" series of books he planned and edited were nominated for the National Book Award. In addition, he likes to watch motion pictures, and this work also uses the composition structure borrowed from movie shots to make the plot unfold with a sense of motion and speed. At the invitation of Hans Christian Andersen Award-winning artist Kouya Anno, he worked with world picture book writers such as Ari Carr and Raymond Boulig to create "All in a Day".

Tang Sulan, the author of Bull King Festival, is a famous Chinese children’s literature writer, and Chairman of Writers Association of Hunan Province of China.

Chen Xunru, the illustrator of Bull King Festival, whose ethnic group is Han Chinese, born in 1949 in Changsha city of Hunan province of China, has been working as an art editor at a publishing house for many years. She is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and has published over ten picture book works. Bull King Festival is one of Chen Xunru's representative works. The illustrator is obsessed with Chinese folk art. Her creative inspiration often comes from folklore, and she integrates Paper Cuttings, shadow puppets, and folk costumes into her works. She uses a heavy color style to exaggerate and transform characters, combined with a highly constructive composition technique, to give readers a rich visual beauty and a friendly and humorous folk charm.

Summary

The Pinnacle of the Classical Chinese Short Story.

The story is about Ma Ji, a beautiful man from Hangzhou city, who takes his father's place as a merchant and goes out to the sea to trade. On the way, he encounters a huge wave and is swept into a strange land, the Land of Rakshasa.

The upside-down world of the Rakshasa Kingdom is completely different from the ordinary world, where ugliness is considered as beauty, and the uglier a person is, the more popular he is. In order to survive, Ma Ji puts on a mask, and with his funny dance and upside-down song, he wins the favour of the King of Rakshasa and becomes a great official. However, hiding his true colours daily makes him bitter.

Taking advantage of the opening of the sea market, he ventured forward, where he met the Dragon Lady, and with his talent was appreciated by the Dragon King and the Dragon Princess, with whom he was married. Later, Ma Ji missed his hometown, bid farewell to the Dragon Princess and returned to his parents. Three years later, Ma Ji was reunited with the Dragon Princess and her two children at the seaside, and the family was reunited.
