Mulan is adapted from the poem The Ballad of Mulan. It tells how Mulan disguises herself as a man, joins the army in her father's place, and fights on the battlefield. After achieving great success, she turns down fame and wealth and returns home. The illustrations are cinematic—epic in battle scenes and warm in tender moments, capturing Mulan's bravery and gentleness. It is an inspiring story of a girl's self-identity, achievement, and transcendence. It also reflects the resilience of the Chinese people, the virtues of loyalty and filial piety, and the longing for a peaceful life without war.
